School Gardens

Mountain Roots Education is the hub for school gardens in the greater Teton area. We work with partner schools to develop, fund, and run school garden programs ensuring a stable and well-rounded program. We offer STEM curriculum that complements the public school learning standards in both Wyoming and Idaho.

Tetonia Elementary School

Built in 2009, the Tetonia school garden was our first in the public school system. A universally accessible surface now surrounds 6 recently rebuilt raised garden beds outside and 6 raised beds in the greenhouse to accommodate all garden visitors. This school garden also has a perennial garden with asparagus, strawberries, rhubarb, honeyberries, flowers, and apple trees. Students gather in the outdoor classroom with a small stage and benches, and there is more room to grow!

Alta Elementary School

The garden program at Alta Elementary began in 2012. This compact garden includes an orchard and perennial garden, a greenhouse with 4 raised beds, and 5 outside garden beds. Kindergarten through 5th-grade students learn to tend a garden and enjoy the harvest in this outdoor classroom. More than a garden, it's also a place to play with a "musical flowers" installation.

Victor Elementary School

Our school garden program started in 2021 and the Victor Elementary garden is growing fast! A greenhouse with 5 raised beds was constructed in the fall of 2022 by a team of volunteers. Outside, an incredible parent volunteer built 7 more raised beds in the summer of 2024. We'll continue to build new phases of this garden until it includes an outdoor classroom, orchard, native plant garden, and berry patch.

Driggs Elementary School

In the spring of 2023, our farm and garden program kicked off at Driggs Elementary (the largest elementary school in Teton Valley) with a field trip to a local farm. Utilizing the greenhouse at the neighboring Teton Middle School, students got to grow and taste fresh tomatoes, basil, cucumbers, and watermelon. In the summer of 2024, volunteers constructed 3 raised beds in the Driggs Elementary courtyard where the students can grow and learn. Driggs Elementary students can also utilize the expanding school garden behind Teton Middle School which has 7 raised beds outside the greenhouse that were also built in the summer of 2024.

Wilson Elementary School

Beginning in the spring of 2023, Mountain Roots Education brought programming and care to the Wilson Elementary garden where 13 raised beds were already existing. The first garden we've managed on the Jackson side of the Tetons, the Wilson Elementary community enthusiastically shows up in support of this garden classroom. Soon, a new greenhouse will extend the growing season at this garden.
